Interview with addnet-team regular

Betty interviewed by Marja Blom

Betty is a regular at the Thursday addnet-team. addnet-team a group of people who come together to learn about the computer on Mondays and Thursdays from 12.30 to 2.00 p.m. She likes to come to this group as it is close to the bus stop and the shopping area. Betty said, “people with a walker can’t go very far, and that “services like this are very necessary. It is a recreational part of life. You get in touch with other people, learn new crafts, get new ideas and get to know what is going on in other parts of the world.”
Betty doesn’t own a computer. She learned to type on a typewriter and says: “Computers have far more buttons to use when you type so it takes a while to learn.”  She wants to learn this for the purpose of correspondence and to type up recipes.  She never learned about computers before she came to addington.net. She was learning how to use email last year and will have to repeat some of it as she forgot a bit during the holidays.

Betty says “It takes a while to adapt to new technology. You have to be patient and you need perseverance. You have to take it step by step but we are all learning and I like that everybody here is equal and that the staff is pleasant and friendly. That gives you a homely feel.  It is also useful for people who have a computer and who can learn when something goes wrong, because that can be very upsetting. Many people like me didn’t have the opportunity to learn about computers at school and therefore this is a good way of learning computer skills which are useful in everyday life." Betty concluded “I hope addington.net keeps on doing these things for years to come”
