Some Community Services available to Migrants:
Learning English is a good introduction to the Kiwi lifestyle and is a great way to become involved in the local community.
The CPIT and Hagley College have over time developed a wide range of low cost full or part time courses for immigrants to learn English. Check course details on their 0800 phone numbers.
There are many other organisations that are funded to teach English for free. For instance, Wilkinson's English Language School runs a night twice a week with intakes in February or July. Wilkinson's also run a scheme that must be supported by employers called "Workplace Literacy", open to all immigrants in that hold permanent residency. Each group is allocated 40 hours of tuition and these hours are very flexible. Details are available from them on 351 7152.
One of the best ways to look for English lessons in your area is to search on the Internet, for example, do a Google search with: free english courses for migrants +christchurch
SBEC, the Small Busines Centre, help migrants that hold New Zealand residency, with free courses on business start-up at certain times through the year. For more details contact them on 366 9978.
